We don't have an official, canonical definition, but one that I have
been using for a while is:
Artificial Intelligence is a collection of techniques tht allow
computers to do things that, when people do them, are considered
evidence of intelligence.
Here's another good one:
The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks
that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception,
speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between
languages.
And one more:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer
science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing
tasks that typically require human intelligence.
And here is a BAD one:
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human
intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and
mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that
exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and
problem-solving.
It's bad because it's wrong: no AI system today thinks like a human.
Also, intelligent behaviors such as perception, learning, and problem
solving are not limited to humans. Consider this observation attributed
to a Yellowstone park ranger on why it's so hard to design bear-proof
garbage cans: "There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of
the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."
